Calvin’s 12 Hour Challenge

The big story of the day was probably the windy conditions.   The vast majority of the Calvin’s Challenges will have the same story.  Windy conditions.  The temperature was comfortable but it was a very, very windy day with no protection at all since this course is over farm land.  The race organizer tweeted in the afternoon that some riders had lost their wills to live.  This, I believe!  At one point as I was riding with Joe and Jerry we had to downshift on a rise that, on any other day we would not have noticed.  The first 28 miles of the big loop was very grueling.  For most that section we were pinned down to, I believe, 6-14 mph.  Once we got out of that section we were moving at about 26 mph with little effort at all but most of the group just wanted to sit up and rest the legs.   I’ll have to look at my Garmin details but this is close to the truth.  On a normal day we would have been moving at 22-25 mph for most of the loop.  It was something that could have broken our spirits but we’ve seen these conditions just about every year.  Out of the 13 years that I’ve done Calvin’s this was probably the third windiest year.  The biggest shame was that right winds were probably calm by Monday.  Perhaps a more detailed report will be posted later.

Congratulations to the 14 riders who braved the heavy winds.
