16th Long Distance Prep Ride Report
— “No WHINING and No Abusing the Organizer!”
We had 12 riders. There were 9 riders at the start and we met 3 on the road.
The sun was shining and the winds were calm. Jim B. had a flat at the start. While he was trying to inflate the tire, the stem broke off and we were back to square one. One of the nearby neighbors offered a compressor but that ended up only got us about 60 psi. We were back to the drawing board once again. Finally, we tried a different pump and that got us moving again. A few miles later we ran into Dan and Tina. After getting on the trail at Elyria, Tina had a small mishap when she couldn’t get unclipped at a stop. There were no injuries to person or bike.
When we got to Birmingham, several riders went ahead, thinking that the riders behind took an alternate route. Anyway, I was late getting the Subway in Avery. When I got there, the first thing that I noticed was how busy the place was and there was only one person preparing sandwiches. By the time I got situated I was now 4th in line behind our last rider. To add more drama to the story, the person in front of me was picking up a call-in and he informed me that they hadn’t had a chance to start on his order. Once she started preparing his order, about 6 people behind me left the line. I thought that he was going to have about 5 sandwiches in his order but it turned out to be 10 foot longs! Deflated once again I got out of line to tell the other riders. The guy was nice enough to let the preparer work my order in.
The return route had long uninterrupted sections. It seemed like we were on one stretch for about 2 hours.
All in all, it was a very nice day. No cold hands or feet but the layers of clothing was full of sweat. A sign that spring is near.
